Step 2: We’ll visit you
A social worker will visit you at home to explain what’s involved.
Step 3: Assessment and training
If you decide it’s for you, we’ll have a look at whether you’re the right type of person and your home is right. Here’s what’s covered:
- we’ll do a health and safety check on your home
- you’ll need to have a medical check by your doctor (GP)
- we’ll carry out an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to see whether you’ve had any relevant criminal convictions or police cautions
- we’ll collect references.
While you’re being assessed, you’ll receive training in group or one-to-one sessions. The topics are things like:
- sharing your home and family with other people
- diversity and equal opportunities
- child protection procedures
- a positive approach to boundaries and empowering young people to take control of their lives
- working in partnership with our team and the young person’s social worker.
Step 4: Fostering panel decision
We’ll present our written report of our assessment of your suitability to provide supported lodgings to a fostering panel. They will make a final decision to approve you or not.
Step 5: Meeting your social worker
Once approved, you’ll be allocated a social worker. This person will be your main contact – you’ll talk regularly about how things are going.
Step 6: Meeting a young person
You’ll be introduced to a young person to see if you both think you can live together.
Step 7: Making a placement agreement
If you feel you could live with this young person, we’ll set up a meeting where you can discuss each other’s expectations, ask them about any needs they have and sign a placement agreement.
For emergency placements, and asylum-seeking placements, introduction visits may not possible.
